Ingredients
- (1 1/2-2 lbs) Ground Beef - 1 lb Tube
- 1 C low sodium soy sauce
- 1 TB light oil
- 4-6 LG shallots, peeled and sliced thin
- 8-10 medium cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 C dry sherry (not cooking sherry)
- 1/3 C dark brown sugar, packed
- 2 TB five-spice powder
- 1 TB rice wine vinegar, unseasoned
- Steamed rice
Directions
This one-bowl meal has a rich flavor from the addition of five-spice powder and low-sodium soy sauce. In this preparation, we used ground beef. Alternately, you can substitute ground pork or turkey. Add to a bowl of steamed rice and broccoli or bok choy and you have a satisfying weeknight meal that is not only tasty, but also pretty economical.
Mix the beef with 1/4 C of the soy sauce in a small bowl. Place aside
In a dutch oven or high-sided skillet, heat the oil on medium heat. Add the shallots and cook until soft, about 15 minutes. Add the garlic, stir, and reduce heat.
Add in the sherry, sugar, five-spice powder, and remaining soy sauce. Stir to combine and increase the heat to medium high.
Add in ground beef and break up to maintain a small crumble while cooking. Stir while browning to coat in sauce throughout. Once the meat is browned, reduce heat to low and add in vinegar.
Remove from heat and serve with rice and optional veggies.
