The Tech Side

This week, we thought we'd give a behind-the-scenes look at how we manage incoming orders, create process plans, fulfill orders, and manage billing.

After using Microsoft Excel for a few years, we quickly learned that there weren't really any computer programs out there that were made for what we were doing. We decided we needed to build our own so that we could more effectively create the reports we needed to know how to cut the meat, how to fill the orders, and manage the accounting side too.

Dave built our system in Microsoft Access, which we named MOMS (Meat Order Management System) and it is also not-so-coincidentally used the most by Diana, the Mom, in our house.

This system allows us to enter each of your orders this week and combine them into reports that we give to Sander Processing so they know to cut eight 12 oz ribeye steaks, seven 14 oz ribeye steaks, etc. Then when the meat is cut and packaged we have a different set of reports that our team uses to fill orders. They will take those eight ribeye steaks and give five to customer A and three to customer B and record the exact weights. Finally, a screen allows us to type in each of the weights to create your invoices.

The system continues to grow and develop as we need it to have more capabilities. We have recently integrated all of our inventory management into the system as well. It may not be the most exciting part of our business but it is one of the most important in keeping us efficient and accurate.
