Spring Time

Love the spring time and so do the cattle! We moved 500+ head onto ryegrass pastures this week. We have to be careful with timing when we move them onto ryegrass (vs. fescue pastures) to make sure they don't mess up the fields in early spring. One interesting note is that the grass can actually be too nutritious at the start of spring. We have to make sure to feed them magnesium oxide for a month prior. Only about 2 ounces per head per day. Otherwise they develop grass tetany which is often fatal. But feed them a little mag and everyone is happy!

We often get asked "How do you move the cattle?" For us, it's as simple as "calling" them (i.e., yelling a specific way) and they will come running from the other side of the pasture. Because we move them frequently, even the younger calves catch on pretty quick that when one of us starts calling, it's time to MOOVE!
