The pic is of Sorghum-Sudan grass that we planted about a month ago after harvesting my beloved ryegrass.  This summer grass is now 12” tall and about ready to take off.  It will soon grow 4-6” per day (I measured it daily a few years back.)  Native to Africa, this crop loves the heat.  So we are using it on more acres than we ever have before.  Next week we will start grazing it and are going to try to stay ahead of it’s growth.  When it gets over 48” tall the cattle knock it over more than graze.  So when it gets above 48” we will chop it for silage and let it start back at 6-8”.

I’ll keep you posted this summer on our progress.

By planting a warm season annual and then in the fall switching back to a cool season annual (ryegrass), we should have the best growth during both time periods.  This explosive growth is what pulls the most carbon out of the air and after we run it through our cows, puts the most carbon back in the soil.  Anxious to get the results of how fast the cattle grow on this grass!
