Frozen Fields

Cold weather may slow the growth of our fields but the one benefit is that the cattle don't "Muck" up the fields with the frozen ground. The tops of the grasses (ryegrass pictured below) will turn brown with the freezing weather but will retain a lot of the nutritional value (~14% protein). We'll keep an eye on temps and determine when it makes sense to rotate the calves to make sure they don't tear up the fields too much as it starts to warm back up. Frozen ground also provides an opportunity to spread manure on fields without leaving tracks and tearing up the fields with equipment.
