Friends in our Field- Dena Anderson

We are a farm, and like any farm there are numerous people who share their time and talents each day to help us grow and learn. No one can work in the food system alone and the work we do, and have done for the last 20 years, takes collaboration and partnership.

It is our hope to highlight the many areas of our farm and how the research we do is impacted by the different partners in education and research we have. 

Dena Anderson – Resource Soil Scientist with USDA-NRCS

Dena has been a soil scientist for over 32 years. She graduated from Morehead State University and has worked the majority of her career in Indiana and Kentucky. She was a soil survey project member and leader working on the update of soil surveys in Indiana and a quality assurance specialist for soil survey in Kentucky/Tennessee. Most recently, as a resource soil scientist she is responsible for providing soils information for a variety of USDA projects, training and assisting agency personnel and the public with the uses of soils information. 

Dena's career as a resource soil scientist has allowed her to become deeply involved in the soil health and regenerative agriculture movement. By interpreting the positive changes in the soil’s characteristics and relating them to producers and the public, they gain more appreciation for the work we are all doing to improve our lands.

Dena is also a member of a national instructor cadre teaching agency staff wetland identification and delineation.  In addition to her “day job” Dena is the owner of Glacier’s Edge Soil Consulting. The majority of this work is assisting homeowners in the evaluation of potential septic sites on their properties. In her “spare time” she enjoys hunting, fishing, gardening and going to car shows with her husband where they show their 1986 and 1987 Buick Grand Nationals.
