Here are 2 soil samples from the same field, one of the samples is from 2016 and one 2020. The difference in organic matter is incredible – 1.73% to 3.58%!

Continuous Quality Improvement
Hopefully many of you have noticed the continued quality improvements in our beef. I thought I would give some of our thinking and continued process improvement of why it continues to improve. We view quality on three main characteristics: marbling, flavor & tenderness.
Water Management
A key part of managing land that can be overlooked is how runoff from rain is controlled. The soil itself actually has a huge impact.
Donkey Protectors
Donkeys are sometimes used in herds as additional protectors of calves from predators (e.g., coyotes). Our most recent trial was less than successful... Jack, was less of a protector and quickly became the wimpiest one in the group (scared of the cows).

We often talk about our top quality genetics but thought we would provide a little more depth into how and why we spend so much time selecting the genetics that we do.
Wildlife on the Farm
We share our farm with an abundance of wildlife. We have 750 acres total and about 300 of those acres are wooded. We have also built 7 ponds across the farm and a wetland. As I’m getting older I get more pleasure in finding pockets of wildlife.
Stockpiling
We are preparing for winter in numerous ways. One of my favorite is stockpiling grass. Stockpiling is the term used for letting grass that grows during the summer to graze in the winter.

We finally got some much needed rain!

Feels like we've been in a bubble the last week or so with rain all around us.

Rain! We finally got a good rain, 1.5” on Sunday and .4” on Monday! What a difference it makes. We went from dust and brown to back to green. Our pastures are in really good shape because of all the rain and cool weather in the spring. Most of our spring field work is done so now we are turn to our summer project time. We plan on putting up some hoop buildings to provide a better winter environment for the cows and lots of fencing projects.
